A different iterative method for the construction of ribbon and belt type molecules using tetrafunctionalized arenes and cyclophane monomers was developed by us [42]. The newly designed key compound 23 allows a repeated elongation of a ribbon type molecule by two benzene units (Fig. 12) [43].

A surprisingly efficient intermolecular photochemical [2 + 2] dimerization was achieved in the synthesis of belt-shaped cyclophanes by irradiation of arenoannelated [18]annulenes like 176 [116]. The highly selective threefold [27t+27t] cycloaddition yields dimers 177 in up to 68%. The efficiency of this dimerization process even at high dilution can be explained with the perfect preorganization of the discotic mesogenes 176. 

More symmetrical belt-like cyclophane molecules have been obtained more recently, which involved respectively four, 277a, and eight, 277b, cobalt cyclobutadiene units (Scheme 46a). ...
