The first metal-olefin complex was reported in 1827 by Zeise, but, until a few years ago, only palladium(II), platinum(Il), copper(I), silver(I), and mercury(II) were known to form such complexes (67, 188) and the nature of the bonding was not satisfactorily explained until 1951. However, recent work has shown that complexes of unsaturated hydrocarbons with metals of the vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, and cobalt subgroups can be prepared when the metals are stabilized in a low-valent state by ligands such as carbon monoxide and the cyclopentadienyl anion. The wide variety of hydrocarbons which form complexes includes olefins, conjugated and nonconjugated polyolefins, cyclic polyolefins, and acetylenes.

The metallocene complexes are only used in catalytic amounts and may be recovered from the reaction mixture. Bis() 5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(TV) chloride (Cp2ZrCI2) and fluoride (Cp2ZrF2) in the presence of magnesium/mercury(II) chloride are equally effective.

Cyclopentadienyl compounds of mercury are limited to (CsHj Hg, which is a molecular compound with linear C—Hg—C bonding and C5Me5HgCl, also having linear (C—Hg—Cl) bonds to Hg. (C5Me5)2Hg apparently cannot be made.102... 

Mercury salts can react directly with hydrocarbons exchanging hydrogen for mercury. This reaction is an electrophilic substitution (equation 5) and hence can take place with arenes, cyclopentadienyls, terminal aUcynes, and also with aliphatic hydrocarbons that contain activated carbon-hydrogen bonds (e.g. carbonyl or nitrile compoimds). When the hydrocarbon contains several equivalent hydrogen atoms, polymercuration is often observed.
