Cycle-averaged population change rates

Since the available data cover a time span of thirteen years (1999-2011), the analysis is not only focused on cross-sectional explanation of occupational risk. In addition, time trends and business-cycle effects were identified. A declining number of accident casualties in this decade was in fact one of main reasons why this study was initiated. Estimation results show a decline of 27% in the average rate of accident occurrence in time. This raises the question whether occupational safety in The Netherlands has truly improved to such extent. We conjecture that structural changes in labor market supply and demand have contributed significantly to changes in the observed average accident rate.
