Cutting performance

Figure 3.7 shows some early examples of this type of analysis (39), illustrating the GC determination of the stereoisomeric composition of lactones in (a) a fruit drink (where the ratio is racemic, and the lactone is added artificially) and (b) a yoghurt, where the non-racemic ratio indicates no adulteration. Technically, this separation was enabled on a short 10 m slightly polar primary column coupled to a chiral selective cyclodextrin secondary column. Both columns were independently temperature controlled and the transfer cut performed by using a Deans switch, with a backflush of the primary column following the heart-cut. 

Some of the recently developed high-performance EP soluble oils have a cutting performance that almost matches that of additive-type neat oils, and they are particularly suitable for demanding operations in machine tools whose design allows the use of water-based fluids.

The cutting performance of these new materials was tested in a direct comparison with similarly hard but single phase (absolutely oxidation resistant) pure alumina ceramics. The results are discussed in Section 4.4.4.

In machine tools, the load capacity, the stif iess, and the speed capabilities of the bearings determine the cutting performance. The stiffiiess also affects the achievable machining accuracy. Bearing friction, in turn, contributes to the machine s energy consumption, and bearing life can directly affect the downtimes of the entire system.
