Since I first interviewed Elizabeth I have had the pleasure of visiting with her several times when I was in the Midwest. When I decided to include in my book an interview with a family member of a person with MCS, I asked her husband, Curt, because I knew they enjoyed a strong and healthy relationship. They have two children—a teenaged son and a married daughter. 

In the narrative that follows, Curt Schuster articulates some of the issues faced by spouses, and his style of coping. Although it wasn t planned, his wife Elizabeth was the first person interviewed for this collection and he was the last. In my opinion, I couldn t have chosen more appropriate bookends. ... 

I found Curt to be thoughtful and candid in his remarks. So much so that during the interview I realized a part of me was braced for hearing painful truths about living with a partner who has MCS, truths which might be unspoken or denied within the boundaries of an intimate relationship, including my own. What I found, however, was that his love and compassion for Elizabeth enabled me to hear his frustration and grief with empathy. 

Curt is the general manager of a large landscape company and nursery. His policy is to avoid the use of pesticides, although there are rare occasions when he will resort to using them at work. On those occasions he hires professional applicators and leaves the area to minimize his own exposures and to reduce the risk of bringing home residue that would impact Elizabeth. 

Curt enjoys physical labor and working outdoors. He shares with Elizabeth an interest in Buddhism and meditation. They are celebrating twenty-five years of marriage this year with a trip to St. Thomas Island, where they have reserved a small stone castle overlooking the Caribbean.
