Cumulative flow

In the oscillating-piston meter, the principle of which is illustrated in Figure 6.3J, the flow of the liquid results in the positive displacement of a rotating element, the cumulative flow being obtained by gearing to a counter.

Equalization basins may be designed to equalize flow, concentrations, or both [27]. For flow equalization, the cumulative flow is plotted vs. time over the equalization period, which is usually 24 hours. The maximum volume above the constant-discharge line is the equalization volume required. The basin may also be sized to restrict the discharge to a maximum concentration of a critical pollutant. For example, if the maximum effluent from an activated sludge unit is 20 mg/L BOD5, the maximum allowable effluent from the equalization basin may be computed and thereby provide a basis for sizing the unit. The cumulative flows for all the hourly time periods are computed in a similar manner (see derived data in data table). 

The second step is to prepare a plot of the cumulative flow volume, as shown in the following diagram. As will be noted, the slope of the line drawn from the origin to the endpoint of the inflow mass diagram represents the average flowrate for the day, which in this case is equal to 0.307 m3/s.

The gas control panel was used for controlling the flow rates of the feed gases to the reactor (by manual metering valves), and measurement by electronic mass flow meters (Brooks 5860). A flow totalizer measured the flow and also displayed the cumulative flow (at STP). The gas control panel and the reactor were located in a fume hood. The data from the flowmeters, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and the digital tachometer were collected by a data acquisition interface (OMEGA Multiscan 1200) and recorded on-line.

Table 5 lists the millipore filter ratios and the cumulative flow times of Pfizer s polysaccharide G. The diluents used for these runs were all filtered through a 0.65-micron filter under pressure. The increase in millipore filter ratio between the 100 percent river water (run 10), 80/20 mixture (runs 11, 12, and 13), and a 100 percent formation water (run 14) is consistent with the high retention of polysaccharide G2 in reservoir cores in the 80/20 mixture (321 Ib/acre-ft) and in 100 percent formation water (542 Ib/acre-ft). Counters are used to count batches of polymer made up, to keep an overall check on usage. Cumulative flow is often found in electronic flow meters, to keep account of total flows through the plant.
