Crystals differentiated from liquids

Both calamitic and discotic liqttid crystals ate also called thermotropic liquid crystals because the liquid crystal phase is stable for a certain temperature interval. Pure compounds or mixtures of compounds fall into this category. There is another type of molecnle, however, which forms liqnid crystal phases only when mixed with a solvent of some kind. For these compounds, the concentration of the solution is just as important, if not more important, than the temperatnre in determining whether a liquid crystal phase is stable. To differentiate these substances from thermotropic liquid crystals (which need no solvent), these compotmds have been given the name lyotropic liquid crystals. [Pg.6]

Peripheral modification of the receptor molecules may allow the existence of stacking structures in soft materials such as thermotropic liquid crystals. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of the octane xerogel of Ic Cl -TATA+ suggested the formation of a mesophase as observed in the phase transitions at 88 and 42°C upon first cooling from the isotropic liquid state (Iso) and at 44 and 96°C upon second heating. [Pg.64]

In principle, structure analysis can be considered as distribution analysis in atomic dimensions. However, from the practical point of view it makes sense to deal separately with structure analysis and to differentiate between molecular structure analysis and crystal structure analysis. ESR spectroscopy can be used with adsorbed paramagnetic ions to study the liquid associated with mineral surfaces. Cu(II) and Mn(II) have been used in his type of investigation, although difficulties are encountered with observing a resonance from Mn(II) in distorted environments. Measurements of Cu(II) on silica at room temperature and above have shown that adsorbed water behaves in the same manner as bulk water, but at lower temperatures it experiences a decreased mobility (61). The differential technique described under (a) has an advantage in removal of the liquid-junction potential and of mechanical faults often encountered in work with reference electrodes of the second kind.
