Area 300 is controlled using a distributed control system (DCS). The DCS monitors and controls all aspects of the SCWO process, including the ignition system, the reactor pressure, the pressure drop across the transpiring wall, the reactor axial temperature profile, the effluent system, and the evaporation/crystallization system. Each of these control functions is accomplished using a network of pressure, flow, temperature, and analytical sensors linked to control valves through DCS control loops. The measurements of reactor pressure and the pressure differential across the reactor liner are especially important since they determine when shutdowns are needed. Reactor pressure and temperature measurements are important because they can indicate unstable operation that causes incomplete reaction. [Pg.115]

In the forced-circulation-type crystalhzer (Fig. 19-71) primary control over particle size is exercised by the designer in selecting the circulating system and volume of the body. From the operating standpoint there is little that can be done to an existing unit other than supply external seed, classify the discharge crystals, or control the slurry density. Nevertheless, machines of this type are frequently carefully controlled by these techniques and produce a predictable and desirable product-size distribution. [Pg.1993]

The effects of perturbation of this type can be seen in the crystal size distribution for a period of 6 to 10 times the nominal retention period. For an ammonium sulfate crystallizer, for instance, operating at a retention time of 4h, the effects of an upset would not be fully dissipated until a period of 1-2 days had passed. Because of this fundamental characteristic, it is necessary that the control system of a crystallizer and the flow sheet be arranged in such a way that stable operations can be maintained for extended periods of time. Only small changes in production rate should be made within any operating shift. Gas AntisolventRecrystallizations. A limitation to the RESS process can be the low solubihty in the supercritical fluid. This is especially evident in polymer—supercritical fluid systems. In a novel process, sometimes termed gas antisolvent (GAS), a compressed fluid such as CO2 can be rapidly added to a solution of a crystalline soHd dissolved in an organic solvent (114). Carbon dioxide and most organic solvents exhibit full miscibility, whereas in this case the soHd solutes had limited solubihty in CO2. Thus, CO2 acts as an antisolvent to precipitate soHd crystals. Using C02 s adjustable solvent strength, the particle size and size distribution of final crystals may be finely controlled. Examples of GAS studies include the formation of monodisperse particles (<1 fiva) of a difficult-to-comminute explosive (114) recrystallization of -carotene and acetaminophen (86) salt nucleation and growth in supercritical water (115) and a study of the molecular thermodynamics of the GAS crystallization process (21). [Pg.228]
