Testing cryogenic

This test is mostly specified by end users and design engineers, and mimics the well-documented cryogenic tests usually done on control valves and other line valves. 

The equipment used consisted of two plates mounted on an Instron testing machine, with gasket deflection measured by an extensometer driven by an appropriate linkage. For cryogenic testing, the entire fixture was immersed in liquid nitrogen. A number of modulus values for various materials are shown in Table II. Note the excellent values obtained for the fluorocarbon polymer-112 glass laminate. 

While Centaur upper stages continue to be used for evolved expendable launch vehicles (EELV), start baskets were never installed into the propellant tanks. Several low-g CFM experiments were proposed (Chato, 2006) and modifications to convert the Centaur upper stage into a cryogenic test bed were conceived, but they never came to fruition (Kutter et al., 2006 Sakla et al., 2006 Gravlee et al., 2010).

Tills electronics scheme has been demonstrated to work on the bench at room temperature to the level described above (see figure IX.F.2). Further tests are in progress to finalize details for optimizing the performance of this electronics set-up at liquid hydrogen temperatures. The cryogenic test vessel mentioned above will have signal leads added to facilitate these tests. 

The test core was installed in a heat transfer test rig, which was constructed as shown schematically in Fig. 8, The test rig is part of The Garrett Corporation Cryogenic Test Facility, which is located in the Mojave Desert near Boron, Cal.
