Cross-sectional areas from the liquid molar volume

1 Cross-sectional areas from the liquid molar volume [Pg.36]

A reasonable approximation of the cross-sectional area of adsorbates was proposed by Emmett and Brunauer. They assumed the adsorbate molecules to be spherical and by using the bulk liquid properties they calculated the cross-sectional area from [Pg.36]

The factor 1.091 in equation (6.2) arises from the characteristics of close-packed hexagonal structures. If D is the distance between centers of adjacent spheres, the spacing between the centers of adjacent rows in a plane is 3 D/2. The spacing between centers of adjacent planes is (2/3) Allowing iV and N to represent the number of spheres along the x and y axes of a plane of spheres, the planar area, A, is given by [Pg.37]

If is the number of planes or layers, then the volume, V, containing N NyN spheres is given by [Pg.37]

Since N Represents the total number of spheres, N, in the volume, V, [Pg.38]
