The geologic cross-sections upon which the salinity data are superimposed (Figs. 2 and 3) are based on available literature (Toulmin, 1955, Herrick and Vorhis, 1963 Chen, 1965 Applin and Applin, 1967 Maher, 1971 Cramer, 1974 Schlee, 1977 Dillon et al., 1979 Hathaway et al., 1979 Scholle, 1979). We divide the stratigraphy of southern Georgia into the units Neogene—Holocene, Eocene and Oligocene, Paleocene, Upper Cretaceous, Lower Cretaceous ( ), and igneous and metamorphis basement. [Pg.99]

The Middle Jurassic consists mainly of marls. The Upper Jurassic formations are massive (over 100 m thick) and are made up exclusively of limestones. During Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous the limestone deposits have been uplifted and resulted in a paleo-karst surface that hosts discontinuous bauxite deposits. Lower... [Pg.105]

The deposit is situated in the Gardabani region, on the right bank of the river Iori, 30 km to the East of Tbilisi, and 7 km from the Vaziani railway station. It is situated on the East end of the Teleti structure lowland and is made up by sediments of the Upper Cretaceous, the Lower, Middle and Upper Eocene and Oligocene. In the arch of the fold there are dome-shaped brachy-anticline, where oil was found and quarrying was carried out. [Pg.241]

As other sectors of the Apennine chain, central Apennines have been affected by various tectonic phases. Compressional events dominated from Upper Cretaceous to Lower Pliocene and generated fragmentation of the carbonate platform and intensive thrusting and folding. Extensional tectonics dominated from Middle Pliocene to present. It initially affected the Tyrrhenian Sea border and successively shifted eastward, generating intensive NW-SE faulting with development of graben-horst systems. [Pg.110]
