Crabgrass

I had a large mint patch outside my kitchen door that flourished every spring without any help, just as weeds and crabgrass sprout to our dismay. I was determined to ascertain the recipe for the mix, and here is what I found. [Pg.121]

The total monetary loss resulting from weed competition in the cereal crops was 1.3 billion annually. The most frequently reported weeds were mustards (Brassica spp.) followed by wild oats (Avena fatua L.), bromes (Bromus spp.), and wild garlic (Allium vineale L.) (11). Losses in vegetables was 5% of the total while in fruit and nuts the loss was 7% of the total. Crabgrass, bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L. )... [Pg.12]

One of the features of allelopathy, as pointed out by Rice (18). is that it is specific. Certain species, but not others, are affected by the allelochemics produced by a plant. This suggests that allelopathy by a weed must be positively demonstrated for each crop. References to specific reports of demonstrated allelopathy by a weed on a crop are given in Table 1. In some cases [crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.), spurge (Euphorbia spp.), etc.], no crop is listed in the allelopathy column. [Pg.23]

Study 2. The effects of wheat, oats, barley and rye mulches on three broadleaf weed species and crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) are shown in Table VI. Weed control data for the corn test at Kinston are not presented because of poor cover crop kill by the paraquat treatment. [Pg.258]

Crabgrass control in the mulched plots was generally lower than the control of broadleaf species, despite the alachlor treatment at planting time (Table VI). Poor crabgrass control in the non-tilled treatments may have been due to the low early season rainfall which reduced the effectiveness of alachlor. [Pg.260]

Plant. The major degradation product identified in crabgrass, oats, and wheat was 6-chloro-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazol (Lefsrud and Hall, 1989). [Pg.1583]

A class of compounds, discovered at Ely Lilly in 1961, are the dinitroanilines, with trifluralin (Treflan ) being an important member. Trifluralin is used on soybeans and cotton. Pendimethalin is a second important dinitroaniline. Benefm is a common crabgrass preventer for home lawns. [Pg.386]

February Chlorazine showed good activity on ryegrass, crabgrass, and parsley. Tolerance by cotton and bean was also observed. [Pg.22]
