The above example, of course, is relatively abstract and academic , and as such perhaps not of too much interest to the majority. Another example, with more practical application, is transfer of calibration models from one instrument to another. This is an endeavor of enormous current practical importance. Witness that hardly a month passes without at least one article on that topic in one or more of the analytical or spectroscopic journals. Yet all those reports are the same Effect of Data Treatment ABC Combined with Algorithm XYZ Compared to Algorithm UVW or some such they are all completely empirical studies. In themselves there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is that there is nothing else. There are no critical reviews summarizing all this work and extracting those aspects that are common and beneficial (or common and harmful, for that matter). 

Historical introductions to chemistry courses and citations in journal articles provided ample opportunity for scientists to trace family lines to suit the discipline-building task at hand and to set up a record for later historians. Ostwald made sure to settle his name into a progeny of physical chemists in his history of electrochemistry. Later, Ingold minimized the historical role of contemporary rivals by spare citations to work well known at the time. 

In this article we have tried to present a general, although somewhat limited overview of molecular dynamics simulations of gas-surface reactions as they pertain to technologically important processes. In the course of this review we have undoubtedly left out a great deal of very important work. We hope. 

It should be emphasized that the wide scope of nucleophilic aromatic photosubstitution does not imply that it will work indiscriminately with any combination of aromatic compound and nucleophile. On the contrary, there are pronounced selectivities. The general picture now arising shows a field with certainly as much variability and diversification as chemists, in the course of growing experience, have learned to appreciate in the area of classical (thermal) aromatic substitution. It is one of the aims of this article to contribute to a description and understanding of the various reaction paths and mechanisms of nucleophilic aromatic photosubstitution, hopefully to the extent that valuable predictions on the outcome of the reaction in novel systems will become feasible.
