Course gravel

The filter media consists of three grades of gravel and sand having a total depth of 6 5 ft Course gravel is held in place by a stainless steel screen which prevents mixing of the gravel and sand. Above the gravel is 8-1b mesh sand topped with 12-20 mesh sand. [Pg.187]

Upon termination of our work, the locality was closed up in course of the building constructions. Singling from the sedimented material resulted in a considerable number of small-vertebrate fossils, which, as we shall see below, are not only different chronologically from the fauna of the freshwater limestone and the gravel in its base, but also represent a terrestrial facies. The following finds were retrieved from the material (with numbers of specimens) (the amphibians were revised by Kretzoi,. the bats were identified by Topal) ... [Pg.105]

The dam is on the Columbia River, which at the dam site follows the steep, western wall of a canyon. Between the dam and the eastern canyon wall is an 0.5-mile wide terrace made up of pervious strata (ranging from silts to gravels) deposited by the river in its earlier courses. These ancient riverbeds, some of them directly exposed on the present riverbanks, could readily drain the reservoir. A grout curtain, 1800 ft long, was designed and constructed to prevent such drainage. [Pg.364]

The embassy residence at Teheran lies in the center of a huge walled compound, much of which has been dug up in the course of new construction. As the ambassador subsequently remarked, it looks like an abandoned gravel pit. The taxi rolled past the gate (where an armed policeman regarded me with suspicion), passed a row of small houses and stopped in front of a fairly imposing building. A servant came out. [Pg.93]

The percolation of a soil depends on the soil particle size and its chemical composition. Because of their small particle sizes, clays, and to a lesser degree sUts, tend to pack together in an impervious mass with litde or no percolation. Of course, sand, gravel, and rock pass water readily. Waterlogged soils that do not percolate support few crops because of their lack of air and oxygen. Rice, which requires water-logged soil, is an important exception. A... [Pg.490]

Natural deposit aggregates are mixtures of various rocks, the majority of which are mainly limestones, sandstones and granites. Because of their particular composition, crushed gravels have better mechanical properties than limestone rocks. For this reason, they should be preferred to limestones for wearing courses, when there is a lack of harder rocks. [Pg.53]
