Couplings diaphragm

Disk Coupling. Diaphragms are used to transmit torque between the iaside and outside diameters of the flexible element ia disk coupling (Fig. 14b). Up to 0.1-mm (0.004-ia.) parallel misalignment can usually be tolerated. Whereas no oil lubrication is required as compared to gear couplings, disks ate limited to moderate torques. 

Heat and oil resistance coupled with its low swell have led automotive apphcations into laminated tubing and hoses (11) with this material. This resistance to the effects of ASTM No. 3 oil at service temperatures of 200°C makes it competitive with fluorocarbons and with the tetrafluoroethylene—propylene copolymer. Fluorosihcones are used to make exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) diaphragms for some passenger cars. 

Pressure. Most pressure measurements are based on the concept of translating the process pressure into a physical movement of a diaphragm, bellows, or a Bourdon element. For electronic transmission, these basic elements are coupled with an electronic device for transforming a physical movement associated with the element into an electronic signal proportional to the process pressure, eg, a strain gauge or a linear differential variable transformer (LDVT). 

Gear couplings, disc couplings, and diaphragm-type couplings are best suited for this type of service. Table 18-1 shows some of the major characteristics of these types of couplings. 

Diaphragm couplings are more susceptible to axial movement problems than gear couplings, since the diaphragm has a maximum deflection that cannot be exceeded.

The torsionally soft or resilient coupling such as the quill shaft and the metal-metal resilient transmit torque can handle misalignment through springs, metal strips, coils, disks and diaphragms, They will tune the system by changing the spring constant K. 

The material-flexing group includes laminated diskring, bellows, flexible shaft, diaphragm, and elastomeric couplings.
