Costus oil

Confirmatory evidence has been provided for the revised structure of a guaiadiene (428) present in geranium oil/ Another component of costus oil has been identified as the triene acid (429) and an isomer (430) of guaioxide (cf. Vol. 1, p. Ill) has been isolated from the roots of a Ligularia species/ ... [Pg.102]

Stout tuberous roots of kuth are characterized by a penetrating aroma. Pale yellow or brownish viscous oil or costus oil is obtained from the roots either by steam distillation or through extracting with solvents. The oil contains resinoids (6%), essential oil (1.5%), Saussurine and other alkaloids (0.05%). Biological actions of costus oil are hyposensitive, bronchiodialatoiy, and antiseptic against streptococcus and streptophylococcus (Anonymous, 1976). [Pg.55]

Costunolide is a germacranolide sesquiterpene lactone extracted from costus oil. With alantolactone and dehydrocostuslactone, it is a component of lactone mix used to elicit reactions in Compositae-sensitive patients. An erythema-multiform-like occupational contact dermatitis case occurred in a chemistry student after accidental exposure to costus oil (CJ Le Coz JP Lepoittevin, unpublished results). [Pg.1139]

A guaianolide sesquiterpene lactone extracted from costus oil. Dehydrocostuslactone is one of the components of lactone-mix, with costunolide and alantolac-tone, used to detect Compositae-sensitive patients. [Pg.1141]

Various fractions of costus oil have been reported to have hypotensive activities in anesthetized dogs, with 12-methoxydihydro-costunolide and the delactonized oil being the most potent, acting through direct peripheral vasodilation and cardiac depression. Most fractions were also effective in relieving bronchial spasm induced by histamine and acetylcholine in guinea pigs, but none had antitussive activity. ... [Pg.231]
