Unalloyed copper

Native red copper, unalloyed with other metals, found, clean and solid, in its own mines, in the Duchy of Mansfield. [Pg.14]

In unalloyed steel containers formamide discolors slowly during shipment and storage. Both copper and brass are also subject to corrosion, particularly in the presence of water. Lead is less readily attacked. Aluminum and stainless steel are resistant to attack by formamide and should be used for shipping and storage containers where the color of the product is important or when metallic impurities must be minimized. Formamide attacks natural mbber but not neoprene. As a result of the solvent action of formamide, most protective paints and finishes are unsatisfactory when in contact with formamide. Therefore, formamide is best shipped in containers made of stainless steel or in dmms made of, or coated with, polyethylene. Formamide supphed by BASF is packed in Lupolen dmms (230 kg) or Lupolen canisters (60 kg) both in continental Europe and overseas. [Pg.509]

The high electrical and thermal conductivities and corrosion resistance of copper combined with its workabiUty give the metal its very wide range of commercial appHcations. Aluminum and Alloys Aluminum and its alloys are made in practically all the forms in which metals are produced, including castings. Thermal conductivity of aluminum is 60 percent of that of pure copper, and unalloyed aluminum is used in many heat-transfer applications. Its high electrical conductivity makes aluminum popular in electrical apphcations. Aluminum is one of the most workable of metals, and it is usually joined by inert-gas-shielded arc-welding techniques. [Pg.2450]

Alloys containing up to l o copper and about 0 - l o titanium have been used in strip form for roofing on a large scale in France, Germany, the UK and elsewhere since about 1960, but no details are available on how their corrosion resistance compares with that of the traditional unalloyed rolled zinc. Under equal environmental conditions, the rate of corrosion of alloys is generally faster than that of their components. The tendency of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, to corrode is greater than that of its separate (unalloyed) components, copper and tin.
