The relative rarity of the mineral has led some authors to conclude that the symthetic analogue (copper chloride hydroxide, atacamite type, q.v.) was used as pigment and in fact there are mnnerous mediaeval recipes for preparing a green copper pigment with common salt. Of these perhaps the best known is that of Theophilus for viride sabum (q.v.).

Calumetite is a blue orthorhombic hydrated copper chloride hydroxide mineral with composition, Cu(Cl,0H)2.2H20. Discovered by Williams, it is named after its type locality at Centennial mine. Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan, USA and is also known from the Tyrol (Austria) and Harz (Germany). Calumetite occurs as a secondary mineral in the oxidising portions of copper deposits where it forms as soft aggregates of spherical or scaly crystals. 

Synthetic copper chloride hydroxide analogue of the mineral atacamite q.v. Cu2Cl(OH)3). It is polymorphous with the other copper chloride hydroxides, botallackite, chnoatacamite and paratacamite (qq.v.). 

Clinoatacamite is a recently assigned form of copper chloride hydroxide (Cu2Cl(OH)3). This is the synthetic analogue, polymorphous with analogues of other copper chloride hydroxides -the atacamite, botallackite and paratacamite qq.v.) types. Not so far identified in a pigment context, possibly because its existence was unknown.

Nantokite is not known to have been used as a pigment, although other related copper chloride hydroxide minerals ata-camite, botalackite, clinoatacamite and paratacamite (qq.v.) have been encountered.
