Copolymers copolymer

By using experimental values of the binary interaction parameters it is possible to calculate miscibility maps and therefore predict the phase behavior of poly-mer/copolymer, copolymer/copolymer, and more complex blends. Tertiary Amine-Containing Copolymers. Copolymers based on DMAEMA (dimethylarninoethyl methacrylate) in either free amine form or quatemized with diethyl sulfate or methyl chloride have achieved commercial significance as fixatives in hair-styling formulations, especially in the weU-pubhcized "mousses" or as hair-conditioning shampoo additives. This success has occurred because the cationic charge affords substantive resins that strongly adhere to the hair (141). [Pg.533]

In most of the studies discussed above, except for the meta-linked diamines, when the aromatic content (dianhydride and diamine chain extender), of the copolymers were increased above a certain level, the materials became insoluble and infusible 153, i79, lsi) solution to this problem with minimum sacrifice in the thermal properties of the products has been the synthesis of siloxane-amide-imides183). In this approach pyromellitic acid chloride has been utilized instead of PMDA or BTDA and the copolymers were synthesized in two steps. The first step, which involved the formation of (siloxane-amide-amic acid) intermediate was conducted at low temperatures (0-25 °C) in THF/DMAC solution. After purification of this intermediate thin films were cast on stainless steel or glass plates and imidization was obtained in high temperature ovens between 100 and 300 °C following a similar procedure that was discussed for siloxane-imide copolymers. Copolymers obtained showed good solubility in various polar solvents. DSC studies indicated the formation of two-phase morphologies. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of these siloxane-amide-imide systems were comparable to those of siloxane-imide copolymers 183>. [Pg.35]

Copolymers. Copolymers have also been studied (16-18). While one comonomer contains 1-2 quaternary nitrogen in a flexible pendant chain, the other comonomer was nonionic. Copolymers of the methyl chloride salt of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (one quaternary nitrogen atom) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and of MDTHD (2 quaternary nitrogen atoms) and DMAEMA, N,N-dimethylacryl-amide (NNDMAm) or dimethylaminopropyl methacrylate (DMAPMA) have been studied and the results summarized in Table VI. [Pg.217]

VAM is used to produce a homopolymer and, together with a wide array of different monomers, a number of copolymers. Copolymers with ethylene are one of the most important classes of copolymers known and, depending on the ratio of ethylene and vinyl acetate, are abbreviated as EVA (high ethylene and low vinyl acetate content) or VAE (high vinyl acetate and low ethylene content) [18] polymers. [Pg.141]

Copolymers. Copolymers from mixtures of different bisphenols or from mixtures of dichlorosulfone and dichlorobenzophenone have been reported in the patent literature. Bifunctional hydroxyl-terminated polyethersulfone oligomers are prepared readily by the polyetherification reaction simply by providing a suitable excess of the bisphenol. Block copolymers are obtained by reaction of the oligomers with other polymers having end groups capable of reacting with the phenol. Multiblock copolymers of BPA-polysulfone with polysiloxane have been made in this way by reaction with dimethyl amino-terminated polydimethylsiloxane the products are effective impact modifiers for the polyethersulfone (79). Block copolymers with nylon-6 are obtained when chlorine-terminated oligomers, which are prepared by polyetherification with excess dihalosulfone, are used as initiators for polymerization of caprolactam (80). [Pg.332]

Another important family of uncross-linked polymers are copolymers. Copolymers are polymeric materials with two or more monomer types in the same chain. A copolymer that is composed of two monomer types is referred to as a bipolymer (i.e., PS-HI), and one that is formed by three different monomer groups is called a terpolymer (i.e., ABS). Depending on how the different monomers are arranged in the polymer chain, one distinguishes between random, alternating, block, or graft copolymers, discussed later in this chapter. [Pg.2]
