Copolymer ionic

Equation (7.12) means that kiilk 2 and k2ilk22 will be simultaneously either greater or less than unity, or in other words, that both radicals prefer to react with the same monomer. All copolymers whose rir2 product equals, or nearly equals, 1 are therefore called ideal copolymers ox random copolymers. Ionic copolymerizations (Chapter 8) are usually characterized by the ideal type of behavior. 

The emphasis so far has been placed on processes which, by their random nature, lead to polydispersity. For some fundamental studies and technological applications, block copolymers ionic initiation and living polymer techniques have been used [3.68], [3.69]. The growing polymer chains remain active until they are deliberately quenched. These processes yield polymers that are monodisperse with respect to molecular mass. Measurements made on dispersions, sterically-stabilized with almost monodisperse block copolymers, yield results which are more readily interpreted.

Although this definition still fits most materials called IPNs, now some hybrid polymer blends, such as thermoplastie ayyarent IPNs, call for a broader concept [3,7,8].
