Coordination polymers interpenetrating

The structure of coordination polymers formed with 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-l,2,4,5-tetrazine and zinc salts can be controlled by the choice of alcoholic solvents. Infinite lattice compounds of the form [Zn2L2(N03)4(Me0H)2(//-L)] and [Zn2(/U-L)3(N03)4](CH2C12)2) have been structurally characterized. The former structure shows an alternating single- and double-bridged species whereas the latter exists as a non-interpenetrated ladder complex.273... 

Insulation is effectively achieved if one particular set of interactions is very much stronger than the rest. This is the situation that arises in many coordination polymers (S. R. Batten, R. Robson, Interpenetrating nets ordered, periodic entanglement , Angew. Chem Int. Ed. Engl, 1998, 37, 1469-1494 Angew. Chem, 1998, 110, 1558-1595). But coordination polymers are not molecular in all three dimensions, and as such are not within the scope of this essay.

The coordination polymer formed by the ligand M/V -p-phenylenedimethylene-bis(pyridin-4-one), 4, of composition [Mn43](C104)2 consists of two (4,4)-based nets that interpenetrate in the parallel fashion [13]. As for [Zn32](N03)2 -4.5H20, above, a second bridging ligand is present between certain Mn nodes whereby... 

A number of cyano-bridged coordination polymers with Prussian Blue-related structures, in which extended linear Ag(CN)2 or AufCNH bridges take the place of the OT bridges of the prototype, show 3-fold interpenetration [1]. A typical example is that of Rb[Cd Ag(CN)2)3] consisting of Rb+ cations and a 3-fold interpenetrating polymeric anion, whose structure is shown in Figure 31. 

While pyridyl-based coordination polymers are extremely synthetically versatile they are not generally particularly thermally robust as a consequence of the tendency of the pyridyl ligands to dissociate or decompose above ca. 250-300 °C. The volatility of the ligands is linked to the fact that they are neutral and hence stable in the free state. Moreover their neutrality means that even in the absence of interpenetration, coordination polymer frameworks are generally filled with counter anions which,... 

Despite the fact that the phenyl groups of neighboring ribbons are somewhat interpenetrated, there are no close interribbon interactions between the ID chains of coordination polymer 9, the separation between the midpoints of two adjacent CU4I4 units being 11.64 A (Fig. 14).

A survey of 301 interpenetrated structures in the CSD and ICSD was undertaken in 2004 which showed the distribution of structure types given in Figure 9.34. The 3D diamondoid net with its large adamantoid cavities proved to be by far the most common interpenetrated solid.
