Most mordant dyes are monoazo stmctures. The most important feature of this class of dyes is excellent fastness to light and washing. Mordant dyes are available ia aU shades of the spectmm with the exceptioa of bright violets, blues, and greens. To be useful, the metal complexes must be stable, ie, must not demetallize when subjected to dyebath conditions and aU aftertreatment processes, especially repeated washings. Chromium forms stable chelate rings with mordant dyes which are not affected by treatment with either weak acid or alkaU (see Coordination compounds). [Pg.436]

Investigations of silicon-metal systems are of fundamental interest, since stable coordination compounds with low valent silicon are still rare [64], and furthermore, silicon transition-metal complexes have a high potential for technical applications. For instance, coordination compounds of Ti, Zr, and Hf are effective catalysts for the polymerization of silanes to oligomeric chain-silanes. The mechanism of this polymerization reaction has not yet been fully elucidated, but silylene complexes as intermediates have been the subject of discussion. In their first publication on this subject,59 Werner and Miolati showed that the molecular conductances (fx) of coordination compounds decreased as successive molecules of ammonia were replaced by acid residues (negative groups or anions). For cobalt(III) salts, they found that fi for luteo salts (hexaammines) > fi for purpureo salts (acidopentaammines) > /t for praseo salts (di-acidotetraammines). The conductance fell almost to zero for the triacidotriammine Co(N02)3-(NH3)3 and then rose again for tetracidodiammines, in which the complex behaved as an anion. By such measurements, Werner and Miolati determined the number of ions in complexes of cobalt(III), platinum(II) and platinum(IV). They not only found support for the coordination theory, but they also elucidated the process of dissociation of salts in aqueous solution and followed the progress of aquations. [Pg.9]
