The reactor was placed in a cylindrical concrete cavity, where the 3-m-thick wall served as a part of the biological shield. A cooled reinforced concrete base of the reactor with six base jacks was implemented on the bottom of the cavity. The bottom bedplate attached to the bottom supporting ring was held by jacks. Hot tack strength is the abiUty of a heat-seal layer to hold together while molten, before the seal cools and sets up. This is a technically important property which is difficult to measure reproducibly in the laboratory. The processing methods for siHcone mbber are similar to those used in the natural mbber industry (59,369—371). Polymer gum stock and fillers are compounded in a dough or Banbury-type mixer. Catalysts are added and additional compounding is completed on water-cooled roU mills. For small batches, the entire process can be carried out on a two-roU mill. Heat-cured siHcone mbber is commercially available as gum stock, reinforced gum, partially filled gum, uncatalyzed compounds, dispersions, and catalyzed compounds. The latter is ready for use without additional processing. Before being used, sihcone mbber is often freshened, ie, the compound is freshly worked on a mbber mill until it is a smooth continuous sheet. The freshening process eliminates the stmcturing problems associated with polymer—filler interactions. [Pg.53]

Manufacture. Aqueous sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium sulfite solution are treated with sulfur dioxide to produce sodium metabisulfite solution. In one operation, the mother Hquor from the previous batch is reinforced with additional sodium carbonate, which need not be totally in solution, and then is treated with sulfur dioxide (341,342). In some plants, the reaction is conducted in a series of two or more stainless steel vessels or columns in which the sulfur dioxide is passed countercurrent to the alkaH. The solution is cooled and the sodium metabisulfite is removed by centrifuging or filtration. Rapid drying, eg, in a stream-heated shelf dryer or a flash dryer, avoids excessive decomposition or oxidation to which moist sodium metabisulfite is susceptible. [Pg.149]

Furnace Design. Modem carbide furnaces have capacities ranging from 45,000 t/yr (20 MW) to 180,000 t/yr (70 MW). A cross-section of a 40 MW furnace, constmcted in 1981, having a 300 t/d capacity is shown in Figure 2. The shell consists of reinforced steel side walls and bottom. Shell diameter is about 9 m and the height to diameter ratio is shallow at 0.25 1.0. The walls have a refractory lining of 0.7 m and the bottom has a 1-m layer of brick topped by a 1.5-m layer of prebaked carbon blocks. The steel shell is supported on concrete piers and cooling air is blown across the shell bottom. A taphole to withdraw the Hquid carbide is located at the top of the carbon blocks. [Pg.459]

Another consideration is the difference in thermal expansion between the matrix and the reinforcement. Composites are usually manufactured at high temperatures. On cooling any mismatch in the thermal expansion between the reinforcement and the matrix results in residual mismatch stresses in the composite. These stresses can be either beneficial or detrimental if they are tensile, they can aid debonding of the interface if they are compressive, they can retard debonding, which can then lead to bridge failure (25). [Pg.48]

Small organisms frequently become embedded within corrosion products and deposits. The organisms may make up a sizable fraction of the deposit and corrosion product. Seed hairs and other small fibers often blow into cooling towers, where they are transported into heat exchangers. The fibers stick to surfaces, acting like sieves by straining particulate matter from the water. Deposit mounds form, reinforced by the fibers (see Case History 11.5). [Pg.126]

As Fig. 20.7 shows, if DS eutectics ( DSEs ) prove successful, they will allow the metal temperature to be increased by =100°C above conventional DS nickel alloys, and the inlet temperature by =200°C (because of a temperature scaling effect caused by the blade cooling). Further improvements in alloy design are under way in which existing nickel alloys and DS eutectics are being blended to give a fibre-reinforced structure with precipitates in the matrix. [Pg.206]

The liquid crystal polymers consist of rod-like molecules which, during shear, tend to orient in the direction of shear. Because of the molecular order the molecules flow past each other with comparative ease and the melts have a low viscosity. When the melt is cooled the molecules retain their orientation, giving self-reinforcing materials that are extremely strong in the direction of orientation. [Pg.53]

In 1997 it was reported that carbon-fibre reinforced PEEK had replaced aluminium in the fuel pump suction manifold of the Airbus. For this application the product has to withstand pressure thrusts of up to 30 bar and resist kerosene at operating temperatures in the range 40-200°C. The ventilation wheel for cooling the electric motor in the same application has also been converted from aluminium to PEEK. [Pg.606]

In Chapter 3 it was pointed out that certain rod-like polymers showed many of the attributes of liquid crystals in the melt. In particular, these molecules were oriented in shear to such an extent that interchain entanglement was small and the melts had a low viscosity.
