The metamorphosis of the medieval into the modern mind entailed a vast ideological conversion from the perspective of theology to that of science. My thesis is that the development of the concept of mental illness is best understood as part of this change. The conditions or behaviors we now call mental diseases were not discovered as diseases such as diabetes mellitus or myocardial infarction were. All this reflects the diverse and complex relations between the scientific work at the Institute and the research policy and ideological orientation it developed in light of the expectations of the National Socialist regime. For example, the main topics of research at the Institute were chosen with an eye toward self-sufficiency policies and armament needs this decision brought with it excellent funding. Conversely, the improved status of the instrumental and industrial aspects of physical chemistry research supported the ideologically-motivated demolition of old hierarchies and social distinctions and helped consolidate National Socialist power.
