Contrasting Approaches to Synthesis

The Workbench research can be viewed on several levels. On one level, the tools each represent research into synthesis algorithms and techniques. On another level, contrasting approaches taken by the individual tools allow for interesting comparisons. Finally, the CORAL project suggests a number of spin-off design tools new approaches to old design tasks that can be taken because of the detailed 

The research reported here highlights three contrasts in synthesis tool development, namely how to handle the interactions between the Register-Transfer Level synthesis steps, the difference between style-specific and general synthesis, and the means of representing knowledge in the synthesis algorithms. 

The general synthesis and the SUGAR microprocessor design paths will contrast this aspect of synthesis system organization.
