Like all incentive mechanisms, contract R D has strengths as well as weaknesses. 1 argue below that the benefits outweigh drawbacks for preclinical and human trials. These programs reportedly account for three-quarters of all drug development costs (Global Alliance 2001). [Pg.281]

In either of these cases pursuit of the development may become irrelevant to the business case of one or other partner. Alternatively the asset itself may not perform well in the clinic or may be found to have long-term toxicity problems. You can hire students. You can give them contract research work. You can build an alliance, license the work, buy the spin-off company, or do some work with the spin-off company. There are different degrees of usefulness and different degrees of timing and value in terms of how much you gain. [Pg.55]

This is a difficult time for Europe s petrochemical industry, but there is hope. Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances can give some players a unique opportunity to improve their fortunes. The number of attractive deals, however, is limited, and in many sub-sectors no more than two or three large deals could be consumated before antitrast limits are reached. Players that caimot or will not contract deals at the business unit level can find alternatives that will let them retain corporate control while extracting some, though not all, of the economic benefits of more sweeping deals. [Pg.182]
