Many chlorophenols are harmful and persistent. It is possible that these may be produced microbiologically in nature in view of the finding that a fungal chloroperoxidase halogenates phenol to yield monochlorophenols and the latter to give dichlorophenols. The sequence continues with producing trichlorophe-nols, tetrachlorophenols, and even pentachlorophenol [208]. 

The extraction of pentachlorophenol (PCP) from pressure-treated wood wafers with supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) was studied in a continu-ons-flow extractor (Sahledemessie et al., 1997). 

Gilbert et al. (1990) identified 182 workers in Hawaii who had been continuously employed for at least three months during 1960-81 in the treatment of wood using various chemicals including pentachlorophenol. A search at the local tumour registry identified two registered cancers in the cohort, both of them colorectal. However, the expected numbers of cases were not calculated.
