Continuity of thoughts

Formulating, testing, falsifying, and employing the predictive value of hypotheses is how science moves forward. The beauty of science lies in the continuity of thought based on careful observation and experimentation and its relevance to future needs. 

The rise of Bachelard s philosophy of science in the 1940s eclipsed the idealist philosophy of Emile Meyerson which was influential in France in the 1920s and 30s. Bachelard s view of the discontinuity of scientific development and its materialization in instruments and institutions opposed Meyerson s idealist emphasis on the unity and continuity of thought and its foundation in the human mind. Meyerson regarded the tendency of science to reduce the apparent diversity and multiplicity of nature to a deeper, causal reality of permanence and identity as a secret propensity of the human mind , which requires conceptual abstraction and theory construction. He saw in the history of science not a terrain of paradigmatic diversity and theoretical pluralism, but constant and recurring forms of scientific reasoning based on principles of identity and conservation. Some cynics, particularly in academia, maintain that the last thing ever successfully accomplished by committee was the King James version of the Bible. In a sense, this text has also been composed by a committee. As editors, we have tried to keep the depth of presentation more or less even, consistent with our feelings as to the importance of a particular method for quantitative applications and to provide the continuity of thought and mode of expression so important in a text. We happily allot to the authors whatever credit may accrue for the quality of the individual parts and, as editors, assume responsibility for the shortcomings of the whole. 

For example, the measured pressure exerted by an enclosed gas can be thought of as a time-averaged manifestation of the individual molecules random motions. When one considers an individual molecule, however, statistical thermodynamics would propose its random motion or pressure could be quite different from that measured by even the most sensitive gauge which acts to average a distribution of individual molecule pressures. The particulate nature of matter is fundamental to statistical thermodynamics as opposed to classical thermodynamics, which assumes matter is continuous. Further, these elementary particles and their complex substmctures exhibit wave properties even though intra- and interparticle energy transfers are quantized, ie, not continuous. Statistical thermodynamics holds that the impression of continuity of properties, and even the soHdity of matter is an effect of scale. 

One of the most far reaching analyzes along these lines of thought was given by Commenge [114] in the context of gas-phase reactions in continuous-flow processes. Specifically, he analyzed four different aspects of micro reaction devices, namely the expenditure in mechanical energy, the residence-time distribution, safety in operation, and the potential for size reduction when the efficiency is kept fixed. 

After 1951, I decided to look towards the United States for continuation of my career. We thought of Brian as a possible post doc to take with us and wanted to get him married before the transition. The line of thought elaborated in this paper continues to be useful for assessing functionally the purity of reagents and solvents and the effectiveness of purification procedures and the warning against spurious correlations remains topical. 

After years of thought, my own explanation continues to lean heavily on the second idea for an operational explanation. I do not believe that Dennis was predisposed to an archetypal submergence.
