Contact resins

Interesting developments were also taking place in the field of thermosetting resins. The melamine-formaldehyde materials appeared commercially in 1940 whilst soon afterwards in the United States the first contact resins were used. With these materials, the forerunners of today s polyester laminating resins, it was found possible to produce laminates without the need for application of external pressure. The first experiments in epoxide resins were also taking place during this period.

The first design based on fluidized beds to contact resin with solution was suggested by the Dorr Company as the Dorrco softener. This used a column comprising a series of trays on which fluidized beds of resin were supported. Liquid flowed contitmoosly upward through the beds while resin was drawn from each bed and fed to the one below using a liquid ejector driven by product water. Transfers of resin from extraction to regeneration columns were also carried out with liquid ejectors. 

A further variation on the use of fluidized beds to contact resin widi solution is that adopted by Himsley." This is illustrated in Fig. 13.3-7 showing an elevation sketch of a typical plant. Contact-pressure resin (contact resin, impression resin, low-pressure resin) n. 

Contact resin n. A liquid resin that thickens or cross-links on heating and, when used for bonding laminates, requires little or no pressure. Typical components are an unsaturated monomer such as an allyl ester, or a mixture of styrene or other vinyl monomer with an unsaturated polyester or alkyd.
