Conjugation of hydroxyl groups

Conjugation of polar groups such as amines, carboxylic acids, and phenolic hydroxyl gronps produce water-soluble compounds that are excreted and these reactions therefore fnnction as a detoxification mechanism. [Pg.92]

Originally, for preparation of such conjugates the hydroxyl groups of monomethoxy-PEG (mPEG) were activated with cyanuric chloride, and the resulting compound then coupled with proteins (10). This approach suffers from disadvantages, such as the toxicity of cyanuric chloride and its limited applicability for modification of proteins having essential cysteine or tyrosine residues, as manifested by their loss of activity. [Pg.94]

The formation of sulfate esters is a major route of conjugation for various types of hydroxyl group, and may also occur with amino groups. Thus, substrates include aliphatic alcohols, phenols, aromatic amines, and also endogenous compounds such as steroids and carbohydrates (Figs. 4.56 and 4.57). [Pg.105]

The C>4 bile acids arise from cholesterol in the liver after saturation of the steroid nucleus and reduction in length of the side chain to a 5-carbon add they may differ in the number of hydroxyl groups on the sterol nucleus. The four acids isolated from human bile include cholic acid (3,7,12-tiihydroxy), as shown in Fig. 1 deoxycholic acid (2,12-dihydroxy) chenodeoxycholic acid (3,7-dihydroxy) and lithocholic acid (3-hydroxy). The bile acids are not excreted into the bile as such, but are conjugated through the C24 carboxylic add with glycine or... [Pg.198]

However, in a recent publication, Shirinyan, Mnatsalianov, et al. (20) find that differences between the rates of vinyl acetate emulsion polymerisation observed with samples of similar polyvinyl alcohols manufactured by the same process In three different factories could be attributed to a condensation product of acetaldehyde derived from hydrolysis of residual vinyl acetate this gave rise to a conjugated ketone type ultra-violet spectrum and could be extracted from the polyvinyl alcohol under suitable conditions. This could be the uncontrolled factor which appears to have confounded nmuiy of the experiments reported here. Even more recently the same laboratory ( ) has reported that there Is an optimum sequence length of hydroxyl groups in the polyvinyl cdcohol-acetate block copolymer for polymerisation rate and dispersion stability. [Pg.31]

The intestinal microflora of man and animals can biotransform bile acids into a number of different metabolites. Normal human feces may contain more than 20 different bile acids which have been formed from the primary bile acids, cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid [1-5], Known microbial biotransformations of these bile acids include the hydrolysis of bile acid conjugates yielding free bile acids, oxidation of hydroxyl groups at C-3, C-6, C-7 and C-12 and reduction of oxo groups to give epimeric hydroxy bile acids. In addition, certain members of the intestinal microflora la- and 7j8-dehydroxylate primary bile acids yielding deoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid (Fig. 1). Moreover, 3-sulfated bile acids are converted into a variety of different metabolites by the intestinal microflora [6,7]. [Pg.331]
