The mechanical behavior of X-aerogel depends on their mass density. The effect of density on the stress-strain relationship was investigated at strain rates in the range 300-400 s X-VOx specimens with different densities were compressed on the SHPB to determine the effect of density on the stress-strain relationships. X-aerogel specimens with higher densities were prepared by applying a thicker conformal polymer coating on the skeletal framework.

For this reason, encapsulation is used to isolate devices from their external surroundings. Encapsulants comprise a variety of materials viz., metals, inorganic glasses, and conformal organic polymer coatings. Each has the same function, to act as a protective molecular barrier. 

Young s modulus values of 2.7 GPa. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) was successfully used to produce a PMMA conformal coating (using methyl methacrylate monomers) on MWNTs. This increased the Young s modulus to 2.85 GPa at 3 wt% which corresponds to dT/dFf of 28.4 GPa. The overall set of mechanical properties indicates that the polymer coating had a significant effect on the mechanical properties at a 1 wt% concentration of tubes, suggesting improved interfacial adhesion between the filler and the matrix material.
