Show that the configuration (determinant) corresponding to the Ei+ ls(a)ls(a) state vanishes. 

The theory of kinetic energy is much simpler than that of potential energy. If the masses and velocities of all parts of the system are known the kinetic energy is calculable, for it is only the sum of the products of half each mass into the square of its velocity. The specification of the potential energy, on the contrary, involves a knowledge of the forces acting in the system and these are usually complicated functions of the configuration, determinable only by experiment.

In considering the retrosynthetic analysis of juvabione, two factors draw special attention to the bond between C(4) and C(7). First, this bond establishes the stereochemistry of the molecule. The C(4) and C(7) carbons are stereogenic centers and their relative configuration determines the diastereomeric structure. In a stereocontrolled synthesis, it is necessary to establish the desired stereochemistry at C(4) and C(7). The C(4)-C(7) bond also connects the side chain to the cyclohexene ring. As a cyclohexane derivative is a logical candidate for one key intermediate, the C(4)-C(7) bond is a potential bond disconnection.

Single-crystal studies allow the absolute configurational determination of polymeric materials that have high degrees of crystallinity. Such determinations are costly with respect to time because of the complexity of polymeric materials.
