Mounting configuration and operating envelope Industrial standards, such as the rathbone severity chart, assume that the machine is rigidly mounted on a suitable concrete foundation. Machines mounted on deck-plate or on flexible foundations have higher normal vibration profiles and cannot be evaluated using these standards. 

For vertical growth, L is usually taken as the vertical height from the bottom of the foot where shims touch the machine to the shaft centerline. In the case where the machine is mounted on a base that has significant temperature variations along its length, L is the vertical distance from the concrete or other constant temperature baseline to the shaft centerline. 

Mathematical models require computation to secure concrete predictions. Successes in relatively simple cases spurs interest in more complex situations. Somewhat specialized computer hardware and software have emerged in response to these demands. Examples are the high-end processors with vector architecture, such as the Cray series, the CDC Cyber 205, and the recently announced IBM 3090 with vector attachment. When a computation can effectively utilize vector architecture, such machines will out-perform even the most powerful conventional scalar machine by a substantial margin. Such performance has given rise to the term supercomputer. ...

Awareness is the ghost in the machine, the part of us that is not an obvious, persistent structure instead, it takes in information from all these other subsystems. It is a quality that inherently defies clear verbal definition because a verbal definition calls for the use of learned language structures, and awareness is more basic than any such structure. We seldom experience pure awareness rather, we experience awareness as it is focused on and mixed with various activities of structures, the learned categories of recognizing and thinking. Thus, in Figure 5-1 awareness is shown as a dotted box to indicate that its quality is quite different from the more concrete structures that correspond to other psychological functions.
