Most simulation languages include a standard time delay function, which is pre-programmed into the language structure. This facility is also available in MADONNA and is implemented in several of the simulation examples.

Awareness is the ghost in the machine, the part of us that is not an obvious, persistent structure instead, it takes in information from all these other subsystems. It is a quality that inherently defies clear verbal definition because a verbal definition calls for the use of learned language structures, and awareness is more basic than any such structure. We seldom experience pure awareness rather, we experience awareness as it is focused on and mixed with various activities of structures, the learned categories of recognizing and thinking. Thus, in Figure 5-1 awareness is shown as a dotted box to indicate that its quality is quite different from the more concrete structures that correspond to other psychological functions.

One of the main reasons for the relational model s wide acceptance and use is its powerful and flexible ad hoc query capability. Most relational DBMS products on the market today use the same query language. Structured Query Language (SQL). SQL is considered a fourth-generation language (4GL) that allows the user to specify what must be done without spectfying how it must be done (Rob and Coronel 1997). The relational DBMS then translates the SQL request into whatever program actions are needed to fulfill the request. This means far less programming for the user than with other database models or earlier file systems.

A structure is a way of grouping data. For example, an employee s record might contain his or her name, address, title, salary, department, telephone number, and hiring date. A programmer could create a structure to store all of this information, thereby making it easier to store, retrieve, and manipulate each employee s data. Each element in a structure has a name. C language structures are analogous to records in a database.

In order to avoid the recurrent problem of the chemical names, the chemist will use his own language, structure formulae.
