Concentration , definition

It is very often necessary to characterize the redox properties of a given system with unknown activity coefficients in a state far from standard conditions. For this purpose, formal (solution with unit concentrations of all the species appearing in the Nernst equation its value depends on the overall composition of the solution. If the solution also contains additional species that do not appear in the Nernst equation (indifferent electrolyte, buffer components, etc.), their concentrations must be precisely specified in the formal potential data. The formal potential, denoted as E0, is best characterized by an expression in parentheses, giving both the half-cell reaction and the composition of the medium, for example E0,(Zn2+ + 2e = Zn, 10-3M H2S04). [Pg.178]

Since this often applies to leaching experiments and to practical applications dealing with diffuse pollution, transport in soils is often treated as a one-dimensional problem. Using a 1-D mass balance equations, both concentration definitions are related through ... [Pg.71]

No effect of added KNO or H202 on G(—RNO)350 was observed in air saturated, pH 2, HCIO4 solutions as long as the concentrations of these additives remained below 10 3M. Above this concentration definite differences in this yield were noted but not studied quantitatively. Added CuS04 reduced the yield of G( —RNO)a5o to nearly zero in solutions of RNO at pH 2 and from concentrations 3-9 X 10 6M RNO. [Pg.330]

PPM solution. However, the more concentrated polymer solutions seem to be less sensitive to the salt effect as NaCl concentration increases. While the observed difference between the percent drag reduction at different polymer concentrations is small, the concentration dependence of drag reduction as a function of salt concentration definitely requires further study. [Pg.281]

In addition, deposits on the surface of the fibers were examined. Based on the computer generated elemental composition data obtained from the EDS analysis, the arbitrary concentration definitions suggested by Goldstein et al. (26) were used to classify constituents major (>10 weight %), minor (1-10 weight %), and trace (<1 weight %). [Pg.132]
