Computer-aided drafting

FLOSHEET is part of a suite of programs called PROCEDE which has been developed for the efficient handling of all the information needed in process design. It aims to cover the complete process environment, using graphical user interfaces to facilitate the transfer of information, Preece et al. (1991). The equipment specification sheets given in Appendix G are from the PROCEDE package.

Modern CAD—an acronym for computer-aided drafting or design—has its roots in the early 1960s. Aerospace, automotive, and electronics companies first used CAD. These large companies were the only ones who could afford computers that could perform the massive calculations needed for CAD. As personal computers became affordable and CAD software became available for this size of computer, CAD became a universal application in design, manufacturing, and construction (see Figure 7-1). 

In the second half of the twentieth century, computers have enabled architects and architectural engineers to function with a greater degree of precision. Computer-aided drafting and design (GAD) software is an essential tool for architects. Computers also can be used to create simulations and animations, as well as detailed presentation graphics, tables, charts, and models, in a relatively short period of time.
