Morbus Monckeberg (medial arterial calcification) or medial calcinosis is the deposition of hydroxyapatite (Ca5(P04)30H) in the media. Most frequently affected are the small to medium sized arteries of the lower extremities, the pelvic arteries and the abdominal aorta. An occurrence in the coronary arteries is rare. As a rule, Morbus Monckeberg frequently coincides with atherosclerosis. At an advanced stage, the media is almost entirely replaced by a homogeneous calciferous layer, which displays itself in the computer tomogram almost like a second skeleton (Rg. 5.143). In contrast to atherosclerosis, lipids do not contribute to the deposition. [355]... [Pg.408]

Figure 10.15 Clinical course of an 80-year-old male who underwent partial resection of the hver for HCC in segment 4. (a) An enhanced computed tomogram taken 12 months after the partial resection (on detection of recurrence). Numerous HCC nodules are observed in the remaining liver. The serum tumor marker (PIVKA-II) level was 18,569 MAU/ml. (b) An enhanced computed tomogram (early phase) taken after the second injection therapy. Almost all nodules disappeared and serum PIVKA-II level decreased to 19 MAU/ml. Figure 10.15 Clinical course of an 80-year-old male who underwent partial resection of the hver for HCC in segment 4. The subjects underwent computed tomography (CT) scanning within 3 days of each blood sample being taken. Transverse tomograms were taken at the umbilical level and at fixed intervals in which the spleen and liver were observed in the same plane. Total fat area, visceral fat area, and subcutaneous fat area were determined from the CT images at the umbilical level by the method of Tokunaga et al. (1983). Hepatic fat content was estimated by the method of Kato et al. (1984). Hounsfield units (HU a measure of density) of the liver and spleen were also determined from the CT images, and the liver-to-spleen ratio of the values (L-HU/S-HU) was calculated as an index of the hepatic fat content. [Pg.135]
