Compostability additive product effects

The manner in which aluminium chloride effects the condensation of a halide and a hydrocarbon has been carefully studied. It has been found that in certain cases the aluminium chloride forms an addition-product with the hydrocarbon, which enters into reaction with the alkyl or other halide. In other cases, the inorganic halide forms a compound with the organic halide, which, in turn, reacts with the hydrocarbon. Intermediate products have been isolated in a number of cases. A distinction is necessary between evaluations of a polymer and a plastic made from that polymer because Additives (qv) (Plasticizers (qv), stabilizers, etc), processing, and fabrication may all have effects on environmental behavior. For example, a polymer or blend may be biodegradable and compostable as film, fibers, or foam, whereas injection-molded products may be inherently biodegradable but not environmentally compostable. 

In iiny urban environment, the sources of trace-element contamination are manifold. As we have seen in the previous chapter, fallout from atmospheric pollution and wind-blown dusts are important sources whose effects are concentrated in urban and industrial areas. There is also incidental contamination resulting from the corrosion of metal objects and from the accidental dispersion of refuse and litter, and there is contamination resulting from the deliberate addition of waste products to the soil, such as soot, cinders, pulverised fuel ash, sewage sludge, municipal compost, or even untreated domestic rubbish.
