There may also be a need to consider the performance of pre-corroded test specimens. Apart from the fact that these conditions frequently arise in service it is also important for two other reasons. First, the presence of corrosion products or other surface layers may affect the access of constituents of the environment to the underlying metal surface-where the corrosion process occurs —and, second, in the case of alloys some pre-corrosion may lead to compositional changes in the surface. These factors should be taken into account in the application of any test method. [Pg.980]

It is necessary to note the limitation of the approach to the study of the polymerization mechanism, based on a formal comparison of the catalytic activity with the average oxidation degree of transition metal ions in the catalyst. The change of the activity induced by some factor (the catalyst composition, the method of catalyst treatment, etc.) was often assumed to be determined only by the change of the number of active centers. Meanwhile, the activity (A) of the heterogeneous polymerization catalyst depends not only on the surface concentration of the propagation centers (N), but also on the specific activity of one center (propagation rate constant, Kp) and on the effective catalyst surface (Sen) as well ... [Pg.176]

An associated technique which links thermal properties with mechanical ones is dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). In this, a bar of the sample is typically fixed into a frame by clamping at both ends. It is then oscillated by means of a ceramic shaft applied at the centre. The resonant frequency and the mechanical damping exhibited by the sample are sensitive measurements of the mechanical properties of a polymer which can be made over a wide range of temperatures. The effects of compositional changes and methods of preparation can be directly assessed. DMA is assuming a position of major importance in the study of the physico-chemical properties of polymers and composites. [Pg.495]

A number of computer programs for generating potential -pH diagrams have been described (49, 50 51). Helgeson (52) describes a method often used within geosciences whereBy compositional changes, mass transfers and the order of appearance of stable and metastable phases are determined in tracing reaction paths from an initial set of conditions to a final state of equilibrium. [Pg.634]

Rather than quantifying a complex total petroleum hydrocarbon mixture as a single number, petroleum hydrocarbon fraction methods break the mixture into discrete hydrocarbon fractions, thus providing data that can be used in a risk assessment and in characterizing product type and compositional changes such as may occur during weathering (oxidation). The fractionation methods can be used to measure both volatile and extractable hydrocarbons. [Pg.205]

Wolfe and Sybert, while working on the scale-up of PBZT, found a more versatile synthetic method in PPA that allowed polymerizations to be carried out at higher concentrations and resulted in a significant increase in both polymerization rate [17] and the achievable molecular weight. The new synthesis method, P2Os Adjustment Method [18], maintains the effectiveness of the PPA while its composition changes on hydrolysis by the condensation by-... [Pg.264]
