Composite damage types

The first semiconductor lasers, fabricated from gallium arsenide material, were formed from a simple junction (called a homojunction because the composition of the material was the same on each side of the junction) between the type and n-ty e materials. Those devices required high electrical current density, which produced damage ia the region of the junction so that the lasers were short-Hved. An algorithm has been developed to predict the thermal conductivity degradation for a high thermal conductivity composite ( 555 W/m-K at room temperature) as a function of radiation dose and temperature [33]. The absence of irradiation data on CFCs of this type required the use of data from intermediate thermal conductivity materials as well as pyrolitic graphite to derive an empirical radiation damage term [14, 17, 19, 25, 26].

There are, of course, many more aspects of composite hardware design that differ from metallic bonded structure but do not necessarily involve adhesive bonding. For instance there are many types of reinforcement tape and fabric to choose from, the orientation of the plies must be chosen, the ply stackups must be balanced to avoid part warping after cure, a minimum number of plies must be used to prevent non-visible impact damage that significantly affects the load carrying capability of the part, etc. 

Because of the many types of damage and damage growth in composite materials, the initial state of the material is difficult, if not impossible, to characterize. Moreover, it is much more difficult to formulate a boundary-value problem to describe crack propagation in composite materials than in metals. 

The rationalization of this anomaly holds important implications about effects, of product compositions on calculations from Eq. (1). To whatever extent Eq. (1) successfully parallels ruby and the Kistiakowsky-Wilson equation of state, and to whatever extent the latter in turn successfully describe actual phenomena, these implications may also serve toward a better understanding of properties of explosives in real detonations and, eventually, certain types of damage effects.
