Onshore processing facilities, and modules brought onshore, have to be cleaned of all hazardous compounds and scrapped. Cellars of single wells, drilling pads, access roads and buildings will have to be removed. In order to characterize quantitatively the polydisperse morphology, the shape and the size distribution functions are constructed. The size distribution function gives the probability to find a droplet of a given area (or volume), while the shape distribution function specified the probability to find a droplet of given compactness. The separation of the disconnected objects has to be performed in order to collect the data for such statistics. It is sometimes convenient to use the quantity v1/3 = [Kiropiet/ ]1 3 as a dimensionless measure of the droplet size. Each droplet itself can be further analyzed by calculating the mass center and principal inertia momenta from the scalar field distribution inside the droplet [110]. The need for improved sensor performance has led to the emergence of micro and nanofluidics. These fields seek to develop miniaturized analysis systems that combine the desired attributes in a compact and cost-effective setting. These platforms are commonly labeled as labs-on-chip or micro total analysis systems (pTAS)2, often using optical methods to realize a desired functionality. The preeminent role that optics play has recently led to the notion of optofluidics as an independent field that deals with devices and methods in which optics and fluidics enable each other3. Most of the initial lab-on-chip advances, however, occurred in the area of fluidics, while the optical components continued to consist largely of bulk components such as polarizers, filters, lenses, and objectives. [Pg.488]

In the MO theory, the most reliable approach for the study of reaction pathways perhaps is CASSCF [12, 13], but multi-VBSCF is essentially at the same level with CASSCF [14]. Since a VB wave function can be expanded into the combination of numerous Slater determinants that are used to define configurations in the MO theory, the VB theory provides a very compact, accurate description for chemical reactions. While both MO and VB theories have their own advantages as well as disadvantages, in our opinions, there are some areas where the VB theory is particularly superior to the MO theory 1) the refinement of molecular mechanics force field 2) the development of empirical or semi-empirical VB approaches 3) the impact of intermolecular charge transfer or intramolecular electron delocalization on the structure and properties 4) the validation of classical chemical theories and concepts at the quantitative level 5) the elucidation of chemical reactions and excited states intuitively. [Pg.144]
