The social status of those employed in agriculture is decreasing. Even the students in the low-income countries prefer to study subjects such as economics and business studies or communication technologies. Agricultural studies and research are predominantly oriented towards conventional land use systems. [Pg.27]

Standards have been a part of technology since building began, both at a scale that exceeded the capabiUties of an individual, and for a market other than the immediate family. Standardization minimizes disadvantageous diversity, assures acceptabiUty of products, and faciUtates technical communication. There are many attributes of materials that are subject to standardization, eg, composition, physical properties, dimensions, finish, and processing. Implicit to the realization of standards is the availabiUty of test methods and appropriate caUbration techniques. Apart from physical or artifactual standards, written or paper standards also must be considered, ie, their generation, promulgation, and interrelationships. [Pg.17]

The project of communicating new technology to processors and users is the subject of much discussion in the industry. The lag time from laboratory discovery to end user benefits is generally three years or more. [Pg.589]

Assessment and Management. Dr. Bley has published extensively on subjects related to risk assessment. His current research interests include applying risk analyses to diverse technological systems, modeling uncertainties in risk analyses and risk management, technical risk communication, and human reliability analyses. [Pg.58]

Because of the challenges posed by informed consent for studies that use high-output, high-throughput technologies, the committee recommends research that develops, evaluates, and disseminates methods that ethically and practically inform study subjects during recruitment and during later communication of study results. [Pg.271]

The technologies available to the research pharmacogenetics community are varied and numerous. The task confronting the end user in the selection of the appropriate tool set is one of overall throughput, accuracy and thoroughness. How one goes about using the vast quantities of variants, which are discovered is the subject of the next section. [Pg.298]

A book dealing with instruments that have been developed by a community connected to both science and industry (termed the research-technology community ) has chapters on Fourier-transform spectrometers and liquid scintillation counters.309,310 Precision scientific instruments were produced by specialist manufacturers the growth of the instruments industry in Britain and France between 1870 and 1939 has been the subject of a book.311 Of the analytical instruments developed in the 20th century, the most widely used has been the pH meter, and its invention and marketing by A. O. Beckman has been described.312... [Pg.171]

Technology is not an end in itself but a means to an end, which is public welfare. Scientists tend to forget that it is the public which in the final analysis has the responsibility to decide what it considers to be in its best interest. One of the most important duties of the scientist is to communicate his knowledge to the public. Too often the scientist sees his role as a decision-making one and often even without explanation. Subsequent public protest is then labelled emotional or worsen Incidentally, the term emotional is, in my opinion, the most misused word in the pesticide controversy. The word which should be substituted for emotional is irrational, for we must not be irrational about a subject as important as pesticides. At the same time we should be, and cannot escape being, emotional as well. [Pg.47]
