Many commodities traded internationally are not classified in the Codex Classification of Commodities. The portion to which MRL should be applied for international trade is not clearly defined. Since there is no international agreement on this, an arbitrary imposition of portions to which MRLs apply to reject or accept a crop is a common practice especially in developing countries. This has occurred on several occasions and has given rise to unnecessary trade dispute. These commodities should be elaborated at the international level and portions of the commodity should be clearly defined. The MRL for mango for example, is clearly defined as the whole fruit, but analysis is conducted without the seed for practical reasons. This however, is not applicable to other tropical fruits such as durian, jackfruit, lychee, duku, langsat, wax apple, rambutan, etc. [Pg.373]

The perishable nature of potatoes limits the market of this raw material to the region of production what is produced in Europe is predominantly consumed in Europe. On the other side, cereals are commodities traded globally and therefore subject to the dynamics of a global market. A recent demonstration of these global dynamics was the temporary shortage of cereal on the market caused, among others, by an increased demand for food coming from China and India, bad weather conditions and the use of cereals as feedstock for bioethanol production. [Pg.239]

The Article 31 Group had meanwhile been working on proposals for permanent intervention levels to apply to commodities traded within and across the Community border. It recommended identification of two reference levels for radiation exposure protection—a lower level below which action is unlikely to be justified and an npper level at which it is almost certain that action shonld be attempted. For the first year after an incident, the Group recommended adoption of ICRP lower and upper limits of 5 mSv and 50 mSv and levels of 10 mSv and 10 mSv for subsequent years. These subsequent year figures were proposed because after one year there will have been time to organise effective and economic means of control should these still be necessary . ... [Pg.79]

In the past three decades, we have had periods where costs have escalated, but it has been a case of one commodity trading off another. It seems that there are now no trade-offs. They all seem to be escalating together, and at a rapid pace. [Pg.154]

Coffee plants are cultivated in more than 80 countries around the world, with 70% being produced by smallholder farmers (De Los Santos-Briones Hemfindez-Sotomayor, 2006). More than lOOmillion people in the coffee-growing areas worldwide derive their income directly or indirectly from coffee production (Mishra Slater, 2012). Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of C. arabica (ABIC, 2010 Silva et al., 2013), followed by Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, Indonesia, Ethiopia, India and Mexico. Coffee plantations eover about 10.6 million ha of land, mostly in the tropics (Clay, 2004), and the coffee trade has an annual turnover of close to 10 billion US, making it the second most important commodity traded in the world next to petroleum (Silva et al., 2013). [Pg.502]
