Wimshurst machina A laboratory eiec-trostatic generator. It consists of two insulating discs to which radial strips of metal foil are attached. After a tew strips have been charged individually, the discs are rotated in opposite directions and the charge produced on the strips by induction is collected by metal combs or brushes. It was invented by James Wimshurst (1836-1903). [Pg.876]

Pernicious anaemia was first described by James Combe in 1824. Thomas Addison described in detail the disease in 1849, although he posited some connection with the adrenal gland. No significant progress had been made until in 1897, when F. Martins and O. von Lubarsch reported an association of pernicious anaemia with achlorhydria. Thereafter, more attention was paid to the role of gastric function in the pathogenesis of the anaemia. [Pg.45]

The problems encountered with variation in combs when attempting to measure absolute intensities is discussed in a recent paper by James Stewart of Beckman Instrument Company which was presented at the 1961 conference on spectroscopy at Pittsburgh and will appear shortly. In this paper a number of IR-7 prism grating spectrophotometers were compared and it was reported that a slit width-to-band width ratio of 1 5 or better should be used in attempting to obtain absolute intensities. A unique method of changing transmittance was used in this work where the beam was blocked a fixed length of time and the intensity of it reduced in this manner. In addition, various thicknesses of calcium fluoride were utilized to study absolute intensities. [Pg.436]
