When compared to conventional systems (such as strippers, scrubbers, distillation columns, packed towers, bubble columns, evaporators, etc.), membrane contactors present several advantages, as reported in Figure 20.3. However, some drawbacks have also to be taken into account, as shown in Figure 20.4. [Pg.452]

There are several other types of apparata used for reactive absorption, though these are less widespread. In mechanically agitated bubble columns it can be assumed that both phases are ideally mixed, whereas in the jet absorber, the gas stream breaks on a liquid surface and is dispersed in the liquid. In spray towers and venturi scrubbers, liquid is sprayed as fine droplets. Thin-jilm contactors, in which liquid film is scrapped from the walls by impellers, are applied for reactive absorption in viscous liquids. Some units, such as wetted-wall columns, contactor, laminar jet absorber and disc (sphere) column are used mainly in laboratory. [Pg.269]

The second type of mass-exchange units is the differential (or continuous) contactor. In this category, the two phases flow through the exchanger in continuous contact throughout without intermediate phase separation and recontacting. Examples of differential contactors include packed columns (Fig. 2.6), spray towers (Fig. 2.7), and mechanically agitated units (Fig. 2.8). [Pg.23]

In the extraction process, the LPG from the prewash tower enters the bottom of an extractor column. The extractor is a liquid/liquid contactor in which the LPG is counter-currently contacted by a caustic solution. Another option is the use of a fiber film contacting device. The mercaptans dissolve in the caustic (Equation 1-14). The treated LPG leaves the top of the extractor and goes on to a settler, where entrained caustic is separated. [Pg.37]

Continuous changes in compositions of phases flowing in contact with each other are characteristic of packed towers, spray or wetted wall columns, and some novel equipment such as the FHGEE contactor (Fig. 13.14). Many modifications of the three types of contactors just discussed have been developed in an effort to reduce costs, reduce pressure drop, equalize vapor flow through each contactor, increase plate efficiencies, or, in general, improve the operating performance of the tower.
