Fig. 2. Unreddened Washington colour-colour diagram for 4 red giants confirmed from Coravel radial velocities. Isoabundance relations from [1] for 0.5 dex intervals from [Fe/H] = -1.0 to 0.0 are shown, except for the (M — Ti)o/(Ti — 22)0 diagram wherein isoabundance relations for 0.4 dex intervals from -0.8 to 0.0 are given. A simple colour wheel can be used to predict colours. Colours that are opposite each other on the wheel are complementary, e.g. purple is complementary to yellow. [Pg.52]

If the decolorisation occurs, the reduced liquid is divided into two portions, it being noted if the colour reappears (1) on shaking in the air after neutralisation with sodium hydroxide, or (2) on treatment with ferric chloride. Non-reappearance of the colour indicates reducible and non-reoxidisable colouring matters (Group A) and reappearance of the colour, colouring matters redticible to leuco-derivatives and reoxidisable (Group B). [Pg.429]

Figure 21. All the 3300 galaxies from Figure 20 are included in this colour-colour plot. The shaded region shows how the 140 candidate Lyman break galaxies are selected for subsequent spectroscopic follow-up. The symbol size is proportional to the object magnitude circles denote objects detected in all three bands, while triangles are lower limits in (Un — G) for U dropouts. Figure 21. Vegetable oils have been characterised by determining their physical properties such as molecular weight and distribution, specific gravity, foreign matter, break content, moisture content, unsaponifiable matter, colour, colour on heating, viscosity, iodine value, acid value, saponification value and hydroxyl value. These properties and the principles of their determination are very briefly discussed here. [Pg.62]

Metameric Colours. Colours that appear to be the same under one type of illuminant but, because they have different spectral reflectivity curves, will not match under a different illuminant. Two white vitreous enamels may be metameric, for example, if one is opacified with titania in the anatase form whereas the other contains titania in the form of rutile. Methuselah. A 9-quart wine bottle. Methylene Blue Index A simple approximate method for assessing the surface area of a clay. O.OIM methylene blue dye is added to aqueous suspension of clay, in successive small amounts, to determine the least amount of dye required to impart colour to the water suspending the clay. Dye up to this amount is absorbed by the clay, so that this is a measure of the clay s cation exchange capacity (see ionic exchange). For most pottery clays this is proportional to the surface area to a good approximation. ASTM C837 specifies a test for clays. [Pg.201]
