Iron. This is a specialty drier that is considered active at temperatures of about 130°C. For this reason iron 2-ethyIhexanoate [19583-54-1] is used in bake coatings that require maximum hardness. The principal drawback of using iron driers is that iron contributes a characteristic brownish red color to the coating and should only be used in dark pigmented systems. It has been reported that iron aids the dispersion of carbon black pigment and reduces the tendency for orange peel film defects (6). [Pg.221]

Addition of low levels of certain additives to PBT can be a desirable way to enhance properties. The most common additives are colorants. Both pigments and dyes can be used to color PBT. Carbon black and titanium dioxide are most widely used. Carbon black and other pigments, for example, phthalocyanines, can also act as a nucleant for speeding crystallization. [Pg.304]

Pliny mentions other black pigments used for various purposes—bitumen for painting statues and protecting copper vessels 40 burnt ivory (boneblack) and a black obtained by dyers a black inflorescence which adheres to the brazen dye-pans (copper oxide). The saepia also secretes a black liquid, but from this he says no color is prepared. That black oxide of manganese was used by the ancients as a pigment, we know from analyses already referred to, but no clearly recognizable reference to this substance has been identified in the ancient authors. [Pg.37]

White pigments are used for white coloring and covering, but also for reducing (lightening) colored and black pigments. They must have a minimal intrinsic color tone. [Pg.8]

The light absorption coefficient of black pigments determines their optical quality. Their color intensity and hiding power depend on the particle size and particle size distribution. The most important black pigments are carbon blacks, iron oxides (Section 3.1.1), and mixed metal oxides (Section 3.1.3). [Pg.143]

Other pigment blacks and the rubber blacks are compacted by granulation. Two processes are used dry and wet pelletization. Dry pelletization is a simple, energysaving method, but it does not work with all types of carbon black. It is mainly used for color blacks. Dry pelletization is carried out in rotating drums, where the powdery carbon black rolls to form small spheres. [Pg.155]
