Iodine color

If it is desired to stabilize slightly yellow-colored iodine-containing chromatograms this is best done by treating them with dilute starch solution. This produces the well-known blue iodine inclusion compounds and these are stable over a long period. [Pg.46]

An aqueous 1 % starch (amylose) spray can be sprayed on later to intensify the color contrast between the chromatogram zones and the layer background the well known blue-colored iodine starch inclusion complexes are formed. This later treatment with starch solution should only be carried out when the iodine excess has evaporated from the layer background so that only traces of iodine remain in the chromatogram zones. Otherwise the whole chromatogram will be colored dark blue (test at a corner of the chromatogram ). [Pg.154]

An attendant took down a bottle of dark-colored iodine. Try this, he said. [Pg.83]

Iodine dissolved in water gives the water a brown color. Iodine dissolved in hexane gives the hexane a pink color. Hexane and water are immiscible. How can these facts be used to demonstrate a liquid-liquid extraction ... [Pg.331]

The tan-brown complex a-li (formed in the absence of iodide) has been studied by x-ray diffraction. " In this case, only the iodine atoms can be located by x-ray diffraction means alone, but consideration of possible means of packing the a-dextrin molecules indicates that each iodine molecule is enclosed by a cyclic dextrin molecule (see Fig. 28). It may be noted that, in this case, the iodine molecules do not approach each other closely there is no opportunity for cooperative effects or interaction with iodide ion such as is observed in the highly colored iodine-iodide complexes. The... [Pg.250]

Detector tubes A simple and relatively inexpensive measurement method involves the use of calibrated stain-length detector tubes such as those produced by Draeger, Kitagawa, Gastec, MSA-AUER, and others. CO detector tubes often rely on the reaction of CO with iodine pentoxide, which produces a purple colored iodine stain. The detector tube carries a scale calibrated in parts per million and the length of the color stain that develops after the required number of pump strokes corresponds to the concentration of CO in the sample ... [Pg.1635]

A Figure 22.12 (a) Sodium iodide in the left test tube and sodium bromide on the right. Sulfuric acid is in the pipet. (b) Addition of sulfuric acid to the test tubes oxidizes sodium iodide to form the dark-colored iodine on the left. Sodium bromide is oxidized to the yellow-brown bromine on the right. When more concentrated, bromine has a reddish brown color. [Pg.879]

If the solution turns red brown in color, iodine is being liberated. [Pg.646]
