Color dances

Nowhere was New Orleans Mediterranean heritage more apparent than in its race relations. In this most un-American of American cities, blacks and whites lived on the same streets, shared rooming houses, and danced, gambled, ate, drank, and made love in the same integrated places of public accommodation, despite abundant laws to the contrary. Upper-class whites hired free men of color to teach their daughters music, and black and white veterans of the Battle of New Orleans of 1812 wined and dined together at celebratory banquets. 

The effect of the leaves came sooner than would have been the case with the mushrooms, was less sweeping, and lasted a shorter time. There was not the slightest doubt about the effect, but it did not go beyond the initial effect of the mushrooms—dancing colors in elaborate, three-dimensional designs. Whether a larger dose would have produced a greater effect, I do not know. 

On Friday and Saturday nights they swarm into the Avalon and Fillmore Ballrooms. .. to be bathed in constantly changing projections of liquid colors and films, to dance in the dancing light of their ecstatic costumes and faces and feelings, and to drench themselves in the saturating rock n roll of the Grateful Dead.. .. The whole environment, in short, is turned on and total immersion is expected.18... 

The Haight-Ashbury community, catalyzed by LSD, wore the colors of a rainbow and was not emphatically male dominated. It celebrated not the agonies and triumphs of the Individual Artist but rather was "into communal living and a new "Bay Area style of music and dancing. Its approach was softer. If it emulated anyone, it was the tribal American Indian.

A retreat from the bare-bones falafel houses dotting the country, Cedars Of Lebanon (154 E. 200 South, a 801-364-4096) offers top-notch Middle Eastern entrees amid a sea of colorful Arabic carpets. For lunch, head to the all-you-can-eat weekday lunch buffet or ask for the all-vegetarian mezze combination. Live music and belly dancing takes place on weekend nights. You can also pick up stuffed grape leaves and the like at the deli next door. Across the street is Star Of India (177 E. 200 South, a 801-363-7555), recommended for its vegetable curries. 

Herman Poole s expression was inscrutable as he gazed at all the commotion. Silver Mylar blimps dive-bombed the long tables, and everywhere computer screens flickered. A robot hand crawled by, chased by a Mylar balloon shaped like a man. A man in a synth suit danced, and his motions made music. Amidst all this noise, color, and space, Herman felt small and lost. I m like this place, he thought, a dismembered part of me here, part of me there. My life is many small compartments, most of them unhappy. 

The week closes with the main social events consisting of a picnic followed by a dance, and then the entire program is capped with graduation exercises and a chemical spectacular—an hour of demonstrations in which colors are produced by as many reactions as possible. This final event is attended by the Campers, their siblings and parents, or Mends who have come to take the participants home. The week literally ends with a (H2 + O2) bang ... 

Binder s return to the Bond production team with Thunderball marks the full articulation of the title format as well as the creation of the most commercially successful Bond film of the 20 century (Chapman, 2000 xiv). The titles build on the sensuality of the previous two sequences while returning to an emphasis on color, shape, and rhythm as determining elements of the dance. Binder effectively combines the sexuality of the previous two films with the distinctive style of the first, complicating Brownjohn s didactic sequences by obscuring the main plot of the movie within more abstract elements of the dance as a whole. Inspiration for the distinctive sequence struck Binder as he watched a female performer swim in a water-filled tank at Raymond s Review Bar in Soho (Rubin, 1995 37).
