JOSEPH K. ALEXANDER, senior program officer, served previously as director of the Space Studies Board (1999-2005), deputy assistant administrator for science in the Environmental Protection Agency s Office of Research and Development (1994-1998), associate director of space sciences at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (1993-1994), and assistant associate administrator for space sciences and applications in the NASA Office of Space Science and Applications (1987-1993). Other positions have included deputy NASA chief scientist and senior policy analyst at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Mr. Alexander s own research work has been in radio astronomy and space physics. He received B.S. and M.A. degrees in physics from the College of William and Mary. 

Some of you may know David Thompson, a faculty member at the College of William and Mary. When he became chairman of that department a number of years ago, he noted that only 15, 16, or 17 chemistry majors were graduated every year. It was a disappointment, because things had not been that way.

Heather Lehr Wagner is a writer and editor. She earned an M.A. from the College of William and Mary and a B.A. from Duke University. She has written several books for teens on global and family issues and is also the author of Alcohol and Nicotine in the Drugs The Straight Fagts series. She lives with her husband and their three children in Pennsylvania. 

I seem to remember that it was Alan Fuchs. He thinks not, but at least two of his colleagues at the College of William and Mary side with me in this.

It is fair to say that other colonies besides Pennsylvania showed an early interest in chemistry. Indeed, Jefferson of Virginia and Adams of Massachusetts weighed in with rather strongly held opinions (see p. 395). James Madison, the future author of the Constitution and fourth president of the United States, included chemistry in his natural philosophy lectures at the College of William and Mary. He even published a letter on his chemical experiments on the Sweet Springs in the Transactions of the Phibsophical Society.
